저는 제 이야기를 만들고 싶은 프리랜서 디자이너였습니다. 사실 지금도 그렇죠. 밤을 새워 일을하고, 내가 만든 광고가 스크린을 스쳐 사라질 때마다 저는 ‘나의 아이를 잃은 것만 같은 기분’을 느꼈습니다.

분명 사랑하는 일을 하는데, 왜 나에겐 허망함만 남은 걸까요? 긴 시간 우울에 빠져지내며 저는 저를 위한 그림을 그리고 이야기를 만들고 싶었습니다. 외주를 줄이고, 그림을 그리고 애니메이션 툴을 독학했고, 모임에 나가 만화를 그리는 법을 알음알음 배우기 시작했습니다.

그 동안 많은 변화가 있었지만, 여전히 저는 바라는 삶에 다가가는 중입니다. 욕심은 여전히 많고, 이상은 여전히 버리기 힘듭니다. 조금 달라진 점이 있다면, 이전보다 조금 더 긴 시간 나를 위해 그림을 그릴 수 있다는 것. 그리고 이제는 나의 어설픔을 받아들일 준비가 되었다는 것.

수년이 지났지만 오늘도 그 삶을 살아내고 싶어 이런저런 일들을 시도하고 남깁니다.

I was, and still am, a freelance designer who wanted to create my own stories. Burning the midnight oil, I would work on projects, and every time my ads vanished from the screen, it felt like I had lost a child. Even though I was doing what I loved, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of futility. After spending a long time in a state of depression, I realized I wanted to create art and tell stories for myself.

I decided to reduce my freelance work, taught myself how to draw, learned animation tools, and started attending meetings to learn how to create comics. Many changes have occurred since then, but I’m still on the path to the life I desire. I’m still ambitious, and letting go of my ideals remains a challenge. The only difference is that I can now spend more time drawing for myself. And I’m finally ready to accept my imperfections.

Several years have passed, but today, I’m still striving to live that life and trying various things to make it happen.
